PickEco Principles

A zero waste store aims to reduce waste by offering products with little to no packaging! We encourage customers to bring their own reusable containers, or offer options in store, and we focus on selling sustainable, eco-friendly products.

Zero waste is a goal, ever-changing and always evolving. While we send a small amount of unrecyclable refuse to the landfill, I truly believe it is never in a wasteful way. We work with our supply chain to reduce garbage from the manufacturing process all the way to the customer. Some companies are fully on board and other companies require feedback so they can change their ways. We only buy what food we truly believe we can sell, and we discount food or give it away rather than throwing it out if it is reaching its “sell by” date. We are not perfect, just as we don’t expect you to be perfect, we are trying, you are trying, and we are all on the same team. (Team give a $h!#)

Not really. While we sell bulk foods, we work to carry as many local foods and products as possible, and we never send them out the door wrapped in plastic packaging. We also carry a variety of zero-waste essentials like straws, bulk bags, and bamboo toothbrushes so you can effectively reduce your plastic footprint.

While there are some deals to be had (ahem, spices), in some cases, our products are more expensive than generic grocery store brands. A grocery store has massive buying power, and we are a small, independently-owned store. If you are used to buying organic and local goods in small packages, then you will find our prices to be competitive! However, please don’t ask us why our maple syrup costs more than it does at Costco; let's not forget Costco is a wholesale buying club, we just can’t beat their prices.

No, about 70% of our products are organic. All of our soaps and detergents are lake/river safe, and our foods have a variety of sources, some organic and some not. If in doubt, ask.

Refilling

Refilling products is easy! Simply bring your own clean, reusable containers, weigh them at our weighing station, fill them with your desired products, and then weigh them again at checkout. Our staff is always available to assist you.

Yes please!! bring your own from home, and they don’t even need to be totally empty! However, remember you are putting oil in a container; please make sure it is fully dried.

If you bring your own container, pop by a till and one of our friendly staff will weigh your container BEFORE you fill it. We do this to ensure you only pay for what you get; it's also a chance for us to inspect the containers coming into the store. We are happy to guide you through the process and offer helpful tips to make your refilling experience quick and easy.

We have very stringent health standards in our store!  Some products carry the risk of bacterial growth (Think refrigerated products or products containing liquids)  In these cases, we can only fill professionally sanitized containers.  To keep it zero waste, we offer a swap jar program for these items, where we take care of the sanitizing.  Please don't ask our staff to go against our health guidelines as we could be shut down or fined by our local health authority for doing so.  Your safety always comes first!
